Your First Virtual Psychiatry Session: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Starting your first virtual psychiatry session can bring up mixed emotions. Many people feel uncertain about what to expect or how a video appointment might feel compared to meeting in person. My goal is to make this process comfortable, supportive, and centered around your individual needs. At InnerMind Psychiatry, every session is approached with care and intention, focusing on your goals, experiences, and overall well-being.
Your first visit is a meaningful step toward feeling more balanced and confident about your mental health care. Here’s how to prepare and what to expect so you can get the most out of our time together.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Taking a few moments to get ready before your session can help you feel calm and focused.
Create a comfortable space. Choose a quiet, private area where you can speak freely. Make sure the lighting is good so I can see you clearly. Natural light is ideal, but a nearby lamp works too. Sitting at a desk or table can help you feel grounded and engaged.
Protect your privacy. If others are home, headphones can help keep your conversation confidential. It may also be helpful to have a notepad nearby to jot down questions or reminders. Creating a calm and uncluttered space often makes it easier to focus on the discussion.
Check your technology. Before your appointment, test your internet connection, camera, and microphone. If you haven’t used telehealth before, doing a quick test call with a friend can help everything run smoothly. Keep your device charged and have the necessary app or link ready before your appointment time.
What to Expect During the Session
The first session is a comprehensive evaluation that allows me to understand your full story and the concerns that brought you to care. We’ll talk about your current symptoms, past treatments, family and medical history, and any goals you’d like to work toward.
This is a collaborative conversation designed to help you feel heard and understood. You’re encouraged to ask questions and share as much or as little as feels comfortable. My role is to listen carefully, explain options clearly, and help you find an approach that feels right for you.
At the end of the session, I’ll review my impressions and outline a personalized plan, which may include medication, supportive therapy, or both. Each treatment plan is flexible and can be adjusted based on your progress and preferences.
