Genesight® Pharmacogenetic Testing

At InnerMind Psychiatry & Wellness, I understand that finding the right medication can sometimes feel like a process of trial and error. Each person’s body metabolizes and responds to medications differently, which can make choosing the most effective treatment more challenging. GeneSight® testing offers a valuable tool to help guide these decisions by using your genetic information to better understand how your body may process certain psychiatric medications.

What Is GeneSight® Testing?

GeneSight® is a pharmacogenetic test that analyzes specific genetic variations that influence how your body metabolizes and responds to certain medications commonly used to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more.

The test evaluates how your genes may affect enzymes responsible for breaking down medications. Based on these results, medications are categorized into three color-coded groups that indicate how they may work for you:

This information can help identify medications that are more likely to be effective and minimize side effects, supporting a more personalized and efficient treatment plan.

Who May Benefit From GeneSight® Testing

GeneSight® testing can be particularly helpful for individuals who:

  • Have tried several medications without experiencing significant improvement
  • Have had difficulty tolerating side effects from previous medications
  • Are beginning psychiatric treatment and want to explore data-informed options
  • Have a family history of variable responses to medications

Although the test does not “diagnose” or guarantee medication success, it can provide useful insights that help reduce frustration and guide more targeted treatment decisions.

How the Testing Process Works

The testing process is simple and noninvasive. During your visit, I collect a quick cheek swab sample, which is then sent to the GeneSight® laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within a few business days, and I review them in detail with you during a follow-up appointment.

Together, we go over your genetic profile, what the findings mean, and how they might apply to your medication management plan. I always take time to explain the results in clear, easy-to-understand language so you feel informed and confident about your next steps.

My Approach

I use GeneSight® testing as one part of a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan. Genetic information is a helpful tool, but it is only one piece of the larger clinical picture. Your medical history, current symptoms, prior treatment experiences, and personal preferences remain central to the decision-making process.
Results from GeneSight® are interpreted in context — I review them carefully alongside your clinical history before recommending any medication adjustments. This ensures that all treatment decisions remain evidence-based, safe, and individualized.

Insurance Coverage and Cost

GeneSight® works with many major insurance providers, including Medicare, to make testing accessible and affordable. Most patients pay $0 to $330 out of pocket, depending on their coverage and deductible. The company can verify benefits before testing, and financial assistance options are available for those who qualify.
If you are unsure about your insurance coverage, I can help guide you through the process or provide resources to contact GeneSight® directly for cost estimates.

Virtual and In-Person Availability

GeneSight® testing is available as part of both telepsychiatry and in-person services. For clients across New York State, including Long Island, Nassau County, and Suffolk County, testing can be coordinated through a mailed cheek-swab kit following a virtual consultation.

For those who prefer in-person appointments, limited office hours are available in Glen Head, NY, where the sample can be collected during your visit.
